Juxtapositions
An intimate portrait of Sydney
Valentin Shkolny 'A stylish collection of black-and-white photographs...the reproductions are excellent' The Bulletin
Selected as the Month in a Minute book recommendation. Vogue
'When we think of Sydney and the photographers who have captured this city we think of people like Max Dupain... Well now there's a new photographic force to keep an eye out for' The Sydney Weekly
Award winning Ukrainian photographer and photojournalist, Valentin Shkolny has created a photograph album of Sydney to be viewed as a short film - where the relationships between photos will make us smile, admire shapes and light, and where morality and emotions are central.
Designed for those who want more than just pictures of Sydney 's traditional landmarks this album takes the reader on a street-level journey: to the harbour, the people, the streets, and the details that often go unnoticed as we move around the city.
Juxtapositions will make Sydney-siders re-think their city and give visitors a book unlike any other, to take home as a memory of their visit. The album contains a poem specially chosen by Les Murray.
'Valentin Shkolny shows us a Sydney filled with wit and humor, a Sydney we have overlooked.' From the Introduction by Alan Davies Curator of photographs, Mitchell Library, Sydney.
author - Valentin Shkolny The Photographer
Valentin Shkolny has published many books in his homeland of the Ukraine and worked as a photojournalist for many large newspapers in the Ukraine and Russia, including Pravda. Due to the lack of freedom his work was always edited leaving him unable to display much what his camera recorded.
Now living in Australia, Valentin is free to work with the subject matter of his choice, to reveal everything his camera sees and apply his unique perspective to his new home. To produce this album Valentin walked Sydney streets looking at the city with his guiding principle always in mind: Let the moment stop for an instant as it is beautiful'
